Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions international students ask most about life in Malaysia and about AntsEducare's programmes.

Is AntsEducare free?

Many of our programmes are free, including the weekly English conversation sessions and V.BLESS community mornings. Some events, such as camps, have a fee. We will always tell you clearly whether there is any cost before you sign up.

Do I have to be religious to join AntsEducare’s programmes?

No. Our programmes are open to students of any faith or none. You will be welcomed as you are, whatever your background or beliefs.

Who is AntsEducare?

AntsEducare is the education arm of ANTS Resources, which was established in 1985 and is based in Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya. We help international students in Malaysia find friendship, support and a place to belong:

  • friendships across campuses through dinners, outings and camps
  • serving refugee and stateless communities through GO>MORE
  • learning English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin
  • coaching, mentoring, sport and cultural activities

Who applies for my student visa?

Your institution normally submits your Student Pass application to Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) after you accept your offer. The Immigration Department makes the final decision. Our student visa guide explains each step.

How long does the Student Pass take?

EMGS aims to process a complete application within 14 working days. Missing or incorrect documents cause delays, so check everything carefully. Leave extra time for your Single Entry Visa (if you need one), booking flights and finding accommodation.

Can I work while I study?

Only in limited circumstances. EMGS says international students may work part-time only during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days, for up to 20 hours a week, in approved sectors such as restaurants, mini markets and hotels. You must have prior approval from the Immigration Department, arranged through your institution. Working without approval can lead to losing your Student Pass. Do not plan your budget around part-time earnings.

How much money will I need each month?

It depends on your city and lifestyle. As examples, Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur estimates RM1,500 to RM2,500 a month excluding tuition. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru estimates RM1,000 to RM1,500. See our cost of living guide for the details and sources.

Do I need to speak Malay?

Not to get by. English is widely used in the cities and many programmes are taught in English. However, most international diploma and degree students take a short compulsory Malay communication course. Learning everyday Bahasa Malaysia also helps you make friends and feel at home. AntsEducare offers Bahasa Malaysia classes as well as English and Mandarin.

How can I check that a programme is properly accredited?

Search for it on the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR), run by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Check that the institution, campus and qualification level match your offer.

Is Malaysia safe for international students?

EMGS describes Malaysia as a peaceful and friendly country, and many international students live and study here happily. As anywhere, take sensible precautions:

  • Use registered transport.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Be careful with online rental and job offers.
  • Save 999, the emergency number.

Our accommodation guide explains how to avoid rental scams.

Can I practise my faith and find food I can eat?

Yes. Malaysia is home to many faiths, with mosques, temples and churches in every major city. Halal food is easy to find, and vegetarian food is widely available too.

Can my family come with me?

For university students, this depends on your level of study. Postgraduate students can generally apply for dependant passes for close family members. Undergraduates are eligible only in limited cases. Family visits on an ordinary visitor pass are a separate matter. Check with your institution and EMGS before making plans.

What happens after I graduate?

Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a Malaysian institution can apply for a Graduate Pass. EMGS says it lets graduates stay for up to 12 months after graduation and work in permitted sectors without employer sponsorship. Conditions apply.
